Relaxation = Purpose

What’s the quality, the element, that magnifies our sense of relaxation? This seems like a valuable thing to determine.

For me, relaxation depends on a combination of purpose and enjoyment. Since I finished up (the next book) Crucial Fictions, for example, I am no longer reading books, because I lack a clear reason to. The purpose is gone, and the enjoyment is gone with it.

The same applies with online groups. I find them relaxing precisely insofar as they are purposeful. Once they become more “social,” I cease to relax.

I suspect there is a formula here, for me at least. A sense of purpose relaxes as well as energizes. A sense of relaxation allows us to attune to my purpose, and optimizes my ability to fulfill it.

This intersects with my renewed interest in astrological lingo, which some readers find surprising.

When I start looking at what the planets are doing, I remember that greater forces are at work. This relaxes me. It reminds me that there is a purpose to everything, including my suffering. Let go and let God.

Astrology is a language that I find compatible with a larger spiritual orientation. It is like having a second hand on the clock, something that lets me see a bit more specifically what’s going on in the celestial dimensions. By helping to put whatever I’m experiencing in the context of greater forces, it introduces the possibility of collaborating (purpose)—but only if I first surrender (relaxation).

It’s the surrender that leads to the collaboration, and the collaboration that allows for surrender.

Surrender doesn’t mean to the power of the planets, however—to “fate,” or even “destiny.” God is moving everything. There’s only one power, one original cause. Everything else is effects.

The planets are the gods, conscious beings that are under God, effects of the first cause. If I surrender to the planets, trusting that they are under God, then I’m surrendering to God.

God wants free agents. To surrender to is to become an active agent of.

(Some might argue that the planets are archons, etc., but that is a dualistic perspective that I find less useful or true than the above.)

Like the planets, I, a human being, am also an instrument, a tool, an agent of the higher power. I have a purpose just like the planets. Not on the same scale, but ideally via the same kind of simplicity of alignment.

The planets and stars are not deliberating over whether to turn left here or stop for a hot dog there. The Sun does what it is, and is what it does, all day long (and all night).

It is emanating all of its being and it is achieving countless things just by being. Think about what the effects of sunlight are, across the universe; but particularly on this planet!

The Sun is not sitting around watching TV. It’s not thinking about other stuff. It’s completely, 100% focused on what it’s doing, which is simply what it is, an image of God, free from efforting.

It’s in a state of total, complete exposure, full engagement with life.

The way for us as human beings to live our lives is to imitate the Sun (Christ), to be constantly emanating with all of our being, and being seen. There’s no rest for the Sun, but since there is also no effort, there is no need for rest.

• Initiating projects
• Being a catalyst for others
• No-nonsense, direct, fearless interactions
