Revisiting Homo Serpiens, Using Matrix 1 as a Matrix 2 Corrective

Aeolian Daze

(Original art for Homo Serpiens by Mr. & Mrs Horsley, 2009)

Over the coming weeks, starting this Wednesday, I will be publishing a new series on the Jewish Question and Christology that will span a cognitive and temporal abyss of twenty-five years.

It will also be an attempt to redeem my sins as “Aeolus Kephas,” self-appointed gonzo-prophet and tragically mis- (and dis-) informed advocate of apotheosis, along with a legion of other bad ideas.

I began this process a few years ago with a redaction of Homo Serpiens: An Occult History of DNA from Eden to Armageddon, and made it through the intro and the first two chapters, which became the “Homo Serpiens Redacted” PDF that I gifted to funders of 16 Maps of Hell. You can find that PDF here.

Disturbingly, the book makes it onto an AI short-list of my work on DuckDuckGo:

I considered also including the material in The Lucid View: Investigations into Occultism, Ufology, and Paranoid Awareness that pertains to Christology and the JQ; having gone over that material, however, I soon despaired of doing so. It is possible I may have the same response to HS, once I get started, but will try to overcome any resistance, as I put my former author-self’s feet to the fire and submit his words to the forge, to see what, if anything, makes it out the other side.

The bits I read in Lucid View brought to mind the quip of a teacher or scientist who responded to a student or colleague, that their answer was “not even wrong”—i.e., so far off-base it didn’t reach the level of inaccuracy. Simply put, if the book was written by someone else and I was attempting to read it today, in 2025, I would toss it aside as second matrix distraction.

The same, almost certainly, will apply to HS, but the fact is I did write it and nothing I do will change that fact. The first drafts were written in 2001, in Central America, while traveling from Guatemala (at the end of my period of salvia shamantics) to Panama, hoping to hitch a ride on a yacht back to the UK (I eventually got there via New York, arriving a few days before 9/11; but that’s another story).

I thoroughly believed at the time that the material was the result of profound personal revelation, and that it was of earth-shaking importance. I would allow that some kinds of entities were feeding much of this material to me, only now with the proviso that they were probably not the most benign kind.

The first drafts were a self-published series of booklets called Apotheosis of Species, which I was allowed to sell in Watkins bookshop (thankfully it was only a mere handful), and which I sent to Kenneth Grant, who responded favorably—an indication, perhaps, that I was both on the right and the wrong track. I later polished up the material for Adventures Unltd Press in 2007, published as Homo Serpiens in 2009.

These sins are my own, and only I can atone for them. What I am hoping, however, is that this series will be more than just an opportunity to set an almost criminally bad record straight, but will serve to illustrate what premature entry into the second matrix looks like, and how one becomes, with all the best intentions, an unwitting architectural intern for the Neo-Gnostic Chapel Perilous.

I also hope to juxtapose this catastrophic self-co-opting with my current, much more mature and balanced, “scholarly” style. (I put the word in quotes, since I never went to university and, to some degree, am still a “Gonzo”—highly intuitive—writer.)

It is remarkably sobering for me to realize just how hubristic (no quotes needed) I was back in my Aeolus daze, both wittingly and unwittingly. I really thought winging it was a legitimate means to the truth, and that I could trust in drug-fueled intuitions, dreams and visions, reading a few (strictly non-academic) books, and a reasonably robust intellectual grasp of language and logic.

In fatally overestimating my capacities in this way, I equally underestimated (or just plain overlooked) the disrupting and corrupting influences of culturally engineered second matrix sources such as Castaneda, Whitley Strieber, Crowley, Kenneth Grant, Jacques Vallee, John Keel, Graham Hancock, et. al), at a worldly level, and of demonic, or at best daemonic, influences, at an inner level.

How this second matrix con-game works—or at least how it worked on me—was that a seemingly healthy, even necessary, distrust of institutions, of official versions of history, and of consensual or conventional interpretations of reality—i.e., paranoid awareness—led me to throw out the baby of the scholarly method with the bathwater of “Academia.”

Since cognition as much as nature abhors a vacuum, this allowed a legion of unofficial, countercultural sources to rush in where angels could not tread, and provide me with the “2nd matrix” of an alternative consensus, within which to weave my own mythical tapestry and “spellcraft.” To be fair to myself, I did acknowledge this in the preface to HS:

Homo Serpiens is a mythic narrative about mythic narratives, a meta-myth of metanoia, and a work of “gonzo occultism.” Nothing of what follows is “true,” in the sense of being established by history, science, or Consensus “fact.” Far from it. . . . As William Irwin Thompson [founder of Lindisfarne] writes, “There are many different ways to construct a narrative about human origins because any description is as much a performance of human identity as it is a description of it.” As such, this work is perhaps best described as an autobiography, albeit a transpersonal one—memoirs of a local DNA complex.

How’s that for a sophistic disclaimer? The author absolves himself of any and all responsibility, should anything in here turn out to be untrue.

Currently, I am finding the corrective value of a partial adherence to first matrix academic consensus, and to more conventional standards of research and analysis, as a way to counteract the gravitational pull of second matrix speculations.

This method—using terms provided by Rudolf Steiner—is a kind of Ahrimanic guardrail, an intellectual ball and chain to help prevent any more Luciferian flights of imagination (posing as genuine intuition) that leave the ground behind entirely, and only ensure another Icarian crash-landing.

Seen this way—with the Christ impulse of the heart as the balancing center—the two methods and matrices, one of material reductionism and evidence-based logical argumentation (first matrix), the other of creative speculation and spiritual aspiration, in which the sky is no limit (second matrix)—both of which have their pitfalls—become complementary means to divine the truth that will someday set me free.

For this series, I will go back to a routine of one article per week, each Wednesday, which I will try to keep around 2,000 words. The old material from HS is currently 16,000 words, but I have no idea how much will survive the purging process (I may leave it in with a strikethrough line, for the curious). Much of the new material is based on The History of Israelite Religion in the Old Testament Period (volume one), by Rainer Albertz, and is about 12,000 words. I will attempt to fit it all into the next twelve weeks, which will bring us to New Year’s Eve—God willing!

Expect some surprises on the way there.
